A Family’s Legacy Restored – 1966 Dodge Phoenix

Some cars are just machines...
Others are chapters in a family’s history.

This 1966 Dodge Phoenix is one of those rare, treasured time capsules. Purchased decades ago by the original owner, it became a constant companion through adventures, milestones, and memories. Years later, the owner’s son brought the Phoenix to Street Machine Garage with one mission — to bring it back to its former glory while honouring every ounce of its soul.

Our goal? A full, factory-level restoration with subtle modern upgrades to make it more comfortable, reliable, and enjoyable for the next generation.

The Beginning – A Piece of History Rolls In

When the Dodge first arrived, it wore its original paint, aged interior, and the kind of wear & tear that only decades of life can give. The chrome trim, bench seats, and steering wheel were still there — familiar to the owner as if no time had passed.

It was a survivor, but time had taken its toll. Rust, wear, and age meant it needed more than just a touch-up; it needed to be rebuilt from the ground up.

Stage 1 – Stripping Back & Rust Repair

We began by dismantling the car completely. Body panels came off, trim was removed, and the Phoenix was lifted high on the hoist. Once stripped, the extent of the rust was revealed — ageing steel that would need precision fabrication and repair.

Every panel was assessed, and we mapped out a plan to remove and replace affected sections, ensuring the structural integrity and originality of the body would remain intact.

Stage 2 – Sandblasting to Bare Metal

To see the Phoenix’s true condition, we took it back to bare metal with sandblasting.

This process exposed every imperfection, giving us a clean foundation to work from. No filler tricks, no shortcuts — just raw steel, ready for the skilled hands of our fabrication team.

Stage 3 – Panel Perfection & Primer

Rust repairs were completed and every panel straightened. The body was then coated in polyester primer, a crucial stage for eliminating final imperfections before paint. This not only ensured a glass-smooth finish but also locked in the bodywork for decades of durability.

Stage 4 – The Transformation in Colour

The Phoenix was treated to a custom two-tone paint job — a deep, vibrant blue with a flawless, mirror-like finish paired with classic silver highlights.

Seeing the body roll out of the booth was like stepping back in time — but with an even better shine than when it left the showroom in ’66.

Stage 5 – Assembly & Modern Touches

With paint cured, the build moved into reassembly. The freshly chromed bumpers gleamed against the new paint. Polished trim was fitted with care. The engine and running gear were overhauled, and minor mechanical work ensured it would drive as beautifully as it looked.

We installed:
- A fully modernised interior for comfort and style
- New air-conditioning system for year-round enjoyment
- Brand new wheels and tyres for safety and performance

The result was the perfect blend of vintage styling and modern convenience.

The Reveal – A Legacy Lives On

After 12 months of dedication, we handed the keys back to the original owner. The pride in his eyes as he gripped the wheel once more was worth every late night and meticulous detail.

From the complete rust repair and panel restoration to the chrome-plated bumpers and custom paint, every inch of this Dodge Phoenix was brought back to life — ready for many more miles and memories.

This wasn’t just a restoration. It was a revival of a family heirloom.
A car that’s now prepared to carry its story into the future.
